Located in the SE region of India, the Salesian-run BREADS assists the projects in the states of Karnataka and Kerala for a better, systematic and scientific approach to development. As a program, BREADS uses the educative presence and accompaniment to help transform the lives of the poor and needy. SLMs can expect to work closely with the children, offering a positive role model and presence among the youth. Like other street children programs, SLMs usual take up the role of caretaker: helping with homework, tutoring, activities coordinator, etc. With over 25 projects through the region, there is no shortage of opportunities! |

Located in the urban NE section of India, Snehalaya provides residential care and rehabilitation for over 180 children at risk in the city of Guwahati. It aims to provide a safe and loving home environment for abandoned, runaways, and orphan children and offers numerous programs and activities which address the children's' physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs. SLMs can find themselves doing many things - depending on their particular backgrounds. Major responsibilities include child care, tutoring, assistance with homework, teaching English, arts and crafts, moral story telling, group counseling, and massage/physical therapy with some of the children.

Located in the rural NE section of India, the Ferrando Speech & Hearing Centre began in 1996 by the Salesian sisters to provide education and rehabilitation for the deaf. There are currently almost 90 disabled children in the school's hostel: 70 of which are deaf, 5 are with down syndrome and several with missing limbs. Children in the school follow the same curriculum as the normal children, while the vocational groups learn basic reading/writing and basic life-help skills such as: tailoring, knitting, embroidery, bakery, candle & greeting card making. SLMs have been placed at Ferrando since 2005 and each one has had such inspirational stories upon their return. SLMs join the Sisters in all of the activities of the school, house and hostel. SLMs are also an important presence among the children during their playtime, during their chores, and also help the little ones during their bathing, washing clothes, etc. This is a very unique project and has received high praises from all SLMs who have spent time at Ferrando.

Located near the city of Chennai (Madras), the Salesian-run Sacred Heart College is a minority institution which focuses on providing higher education to the poor in a Christian atmosphere of peace, justice and social responsibility. The SLM's focus is on teaching English and maintaining a Salesian presence among the students. The SLM facilitates a "Spoken English" class along with teaching another 3-4 classes of about 15 students each. SLMs may also find themselves helping students out with editing jobs, i.e. the college website or magazine. As with other sites, the SLM shares time with students playing sports and socializing - giving them a good example and encouraging them to practice their English outside of class! In addition, SHC offers a unique opportunity to live in a community of more than 20 Salesian priests/brothers!
