Background

Centro Salesiano do Menor is a vocational school that has 2 sessions.  Morning session 7:30a.m. to 11:30 a.m has around 400 students and the afternoon session 1:30pm to 5:30pm also has around 400 students.  Classes offered: ceramics, sewing and tailoring, furniture upholstering, refrigeration repair, I.T./Computers (Basic and Advanced), Arts and Crafts.  Students ages range from 12-18yrs old and they have classes M,T, Th, and F.

The vocational school started in 1994 and takes students from poor income families from all of the city.  Porto Velho’s population is around 380,000 people.

The Salesians have the main parish of Nossa Senhora de Fatima which is located next to the vocational school and they also have 4 other chapels/communities that they take care of.

Colegio Dom Bosco has 770 students from grades 1st thru high school.  The day begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m.  In the afternoon sports and dance programs are offered to the students.

SLM Duties

  • Volunteers would assist with activities such as “Good Morning”, “Good Afternoon” with the pastoral team at the vocational school, possible tutor or teach English in an after school program.
