Summer Begins with “Kemps”, BBQ, and Discerning

South Orange, NJ – From June 4th through the 6th thirteen men and women participated in the Salesian Lay Missioner (SLM) discernment weekend.  Both coasts brought candidates eager to learn more about the SLM program in order to help them discern whether or not God is calling them to give a year+ to the Salesians.

During the weekend candidates learned about who the Salesians and Don Bosco are, the different site placements, the Salesian Oratory Criteria, and what it means to “discern” a calling such as this.  Salesian priests Fr. Dominic Tran, Fr. Steve Leake, and Fr. Mark Hyde all helped to make the weekend special.

Other talks/reflections were facilitated by SLM director Adam Rudin as well and Salesian Domestic Volunteer director Meg Fraino.

One of the highlights from the weekend was the panel of returned SLMs:  Br. Robert Malusa SDB (Freetown, Sierra Leone), Matt Welsh (Okinawa, Bolivia) and Jerica Youngken (Cochabamba, Bolivia).  The panel gave the candidates the opportunity to ask questions and learn, first-hand, how serving in the missions has affected their lives and advice they could offer to those in discernment.
